FIM Europe WECKMAN TAKES CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD

Matterley Basin (Great Britain), 24 May 2015 – Young Brit Jack Bintcliffe put in a dominating performance at his home event to win the second race of the weekend with a time gap of sixteen seconds over Emil Weckman, who, with his race win yesterday, moves into the championship lead.

The holeshot was taken once again by Mack Bouwense who started strongly but found himself slipping back through the pack as the race progressed. With his home fans cheering him on, Bintcliffe took the lead after the first couple of corners, which allowed him to make his getaway. Close on his tail for a time was fellow Brit, and wildcard rider for this event, Jake Parker who rode strongly all race until an incident caused him to lose time in the closing laps.

Although Bintcliffe and Weckman were able to pull out a large gap over the rest of the field, Yago Martinez, Albin Larsen and Tim Edberg battled hard to close the gap. All three flew over the big jumps and rode with everything they had to maintain position. Unfortunately, Martinez pushed a little too hard and crashed in the technical section. Although the young Spaniard recovered quickly, he wasn’t able to make up the time lost and finished sixth, behind Alexis Collignon and Timothé Berry.

Albin Larsen, the red plate holder going into this event, scored good points with third in the second race but it wasn’t enough to keep a hold of the championship lead.

The next round of the Honda 150 European Championship will be at the MXGP of Germany, Teutschenthal, on the 20th and 21st of June.

Jack Bintcliffe #11 – Race Two Winner

“It feels great to win, especially at home. Coming over that finish line jump with the chequered flag going, people cheering and all the air horns in the crowd it was just an absolutely amazing feeling. Hopefully I will have some good luck again at the next race as I aim to hopefully get that red plate.”

Emil Weckman #25 – Championship Leader and Race One Winner

“This weekend started pretty good: I tried to get the holeshot in the first heat but had a bad start, I rode the best I could though and finished first and then second today. It’s not everything to have the red plate because the series is not over; we still have four races left, it is nice to have it though.”

Davy Dousselaere – Honda Europe Off-Road Manager

“We had a very successful race with a full grid of riders, which makes it very competitive. We also saw very strong performances from Jack Bintcliffe and Emil Weckman, who are now also the top two in the championship. There are some big jumps here and it’s great to see the riders really going for them. You can also really see the progress that these riders are making, even from the first round in Italy. For sure it’s going to make Germany very interesting in a few weeks time.”
