AMODJAR-AMODJAR : LA PLUS BELLE SPECIALE DE L’AFRICA ECO RACE 2024

Tous les concurrents étaient unanimes à l’arrivée, installée en bout de piste de l’aérodrome de Chinguetti, pour dire que cette 9ème étape sous forme de boucle autour d’Amodjar était la plus belle jusqu’à présent sur cette 15ème édition de l’AFRICA ECO RACE.   Mais c’était aussi la plus difficile avec un copieux cordon de dunes de 90 km et, encore une fois, des terrains variés usant pour les machines et les hommes. Le tout sur 363 kilomètres et un soleil de plomb. Résultat, des écarts assez importants à l’arrivée et de nombreux bouleversements dans les classements, hormis dans le haut du tableau.

Comme chaque jour depuis le début de l’épreuve, ce sont trois phares de moto que les hommes du CP arrivée et les journalistes ont pu apercevoir à l’horizon. Et devinez quoi, il s’agissait du 103, du 111 et du 113, à savoir d’Alessandro BOTTURI, de Jacopo CERUTTI et de Pol TARRES. Les deux YAMAHA 700 Ténéré et l’APRILIA 660 Tuareg. Décidément, ces trois pilotes sont pour l’instant incapables de se départager sur la piste. La victoire devait donc revenir à BOTTURI devant CERRUTI et TARRES. C’était sans compter sur une pénalité de 6 minutes pour une vitesse excessive dans une DZ qui prive de victoire BOTTURI et le relègue ce soir à 00:07:04 au général de CERUTTI.

Une sanction malvenue à deux jours de l’arrivée pour le seul pilote exempt de toute pénalité depuis le début du Rallye.

Derrière, on notera la superbe performance du médaillé Olympique Italien Marco Aurelio FONTANA, 4ème au guidon de sa HONDA à seulement 18 minutes et qui participe à son premier grand rallye. Il devance Marco MENICHINI, pour la première fois dans le top 5, au guidon de son HUSQVARNA et Giovanni GRITTI qui s’est fait une belle frayeur en chutant avec sa HONDA.

Heureusement sans gravité ! Même punition aujourd’hui pour Alexandre VAUDAN, leader du challenge Rookie Rider By Acerbis et victime d’une grosse chute qui a bien abimé sa KTM. Le Suisse était sonné à l’arrivée qu’il a tout de même franchi en 7ème position, juste devant le Français Atilio FERT, qui attendait les difficultés du parcours pour briller. C’est chose faite !

Mais la performance du jour est à mettre à l’actif de Juan PEDRERO GARCIA. En effet, la HARLEY DAVIDSON 1250 PAN AMERICA s’élançait en 23ème position. Après une chute au kilomètre 40 et au prix d’une grosse attaque, y compris dans les dunes, le géant espagnol s’est octroyé le 9ème temps du jour. Un véritable exploit quand on regarde la physionomie du parcours loin d’être idéale pour la « grosse » HARLEY. Un mot enfin sur Kevin DURAND qui accroche pour la première fois également le top 10. Le Français avait un immense sourire à l’arrivée tant il s’est régalé. Chez les Motul Xtrem Rider, seconde victoire consécutive pour le Français Patrice CARILLON qui, en terminant 13ème, conforte sa place au général provisoire de cette catégorie des malles moto sans assistance.

Et de cinq ! Cinquième succès en spéciale pour Pierre-Louis LOUBET et François BORSOTTO. Le pilote Français a fêté par une victoire la signature de son contrat en WRC2 chez SKODA. Après une journée d’hier marquée par un problème mécanique, le Corse partait 7ème ce matin. Cela ne l’a pas empêché de remporter la spéciale avec 36 secondes d’avance sur le CAN AM de Carlos VENTO et Carlos RUIZ MORENO. Les Espagnols réalisent au passage une incroyable performance puisqu’ils étaient privés de traction avant depuis le kilomètre 20. Heatcliff ZINGRAF et Gregory REVEST complètent le podium du jour.

Quant à Gautier PAULIN et Remi BOULANGER, après une crevaison matinale, les leaders du général ont roulé avec l’autre APACHE de LOUBET, sans jamais forcer le rythme pour économiser au maximum l’auto. Les Français terminent néanmoins cinquièmes. Une journée d’ailleurs idéale pour les SSV puisqu’il faut descendre jusqu’à la 7ème position pour trouver la première auto avec le TOYOTA de Pascal FERYN et Kurt KEYSERS. Les Belges devancent de 24 minutes le TOYOTA des Hollandais Teun STAM et Rene BARGERMAN. Les Hongrois Imre VARGA et Jozsef TOMA prennent la 3ème place pour 59 secondes seulement.

Chez le camion, Tomas TOMECEK, s’est une nouvelle fois imposé. Seul au volant de son TATRA, le Tchèque a devancé le GINAF des Belges Cedric FERYN, Bjorn BURGELMAN et Tom DE LEUW alors que les Hollandais Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN et Marco SIEMONS terminent pour une fois 3ème avec leur SCANIA. Au général, Tomas TOMECEK est au pied du podium du classement Auto/SSV/Camion de cette AFRICA ECO RACE 2024.

Dans la course Classic, cette 21ème Zone de Régularité de 35 km, effectuée sur cette 9ème étape, a souri à Rene DECLERCQ et John DEMEESTER. Au volant de leur BOMBARDIER Iltis de 1980, les Belges ont devancé l’Autrichien Peter BRABECK-LETMATHE et le Français Jean-Michel GAYTE. Andres BRABECK-LETMATHE et Laurent MAGAT, eux aussi sur un MITSUBISHI Pajero de 1998, obtiennent la médaille de bronze du jour.

Demain, la caravane de l’AFRICA ECO RACE va prendre la direction du village d’Akjoujt situé sur la route entre Atar et Nouakchott. Une étape de 413 km dont 387 km de spéciale et un départ depuis le bivouac qui permettra à toutes les assistances de voir s’élancer les véhicules de course. L’avant-dernière occasion de briller sur un parcours composé à 90% de sable faisant la part belle au pilotage.

AMODJAR-AMODJAR: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPECIAL OF THE AFRICA ECO RACE 2024

All the competitors were unanimous upon arriving at the finish line located on the runway of the Chinguetti airfield in saying that this 9th stage in the form of a loop around Amodjar was the most beautiful so far in this 15th edition of the AFRICA ECO RACE. But it was also the most difficult, with a copious 90km stretch of dunes and, once again, varied terrain that was hard on both machines and men. All this over 363 kilometers in blazing sunshine. As a result, the gaps at the finish were quite large, and the rankings were shaken up several times, except at the top of the table.

As has been the case every day since the start of the event, three motorbike headlights were seen on the horizon by the CP finishers and journalists. And guess what, they were 103, 111 and 113, namely Alessandro BOTTURI, Jacopo CERUTTI and Pol TARRES. The two YAMAHA 700 Tenere and the APRILIA 660 Tuareg.

For the moment, these three riders are unable to decide between themselves on the track. Victory should have gone to BOTTURI ahead of CERRUTI and TARRES. But a 6-minute penalty for excessive speed in a SZ deprived BOTTURI of victory and relegated him this evening to 00:07:04 behind CERUTTI. It was an unwelcome penalty two days from the finish for the only driver to be free of any penalties since the start of the rally.

Behind him was the superb performance of Italian Olympic medalist Marco Aurelio FONTANA, 4th on his HONDA by just 18 minutes and taking part in his first major rally. He was ahead of Marco MENICHINI, in the top 5 for the first time, aboard his HUSQVARNA, and Giovanni GRITTI, who had a scare when he crashed his HONDA. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious! The same punishment was meted out today to Alexandre VAUDAN, leader of the Rookie Rider By Acerbis challenge and victim of a heavy crash that damaged his KTM.

The Swiss rider was stunned at the finish, which he still managed to finish in 7th position, just ahead of French rider Atilio FERT, who was waiting for the difficult course to shine. It’s a done deal!

But the performance of the day went to Juan Pedrero Garcia. The HARLEY DAVIDSON 1250 PAN AMERICA set off in 23rd position. After a crash at kilometer 40, the Spanish giant put in a strong attack, including in the dunes, to claim the 9th fastest time of the day. A real achievement when you consider that the course was far from ideal for the ‘big’ HARLEY. Finally, a word about Kevin DURAND, who also cracked the top 10 for the first time. The Frenchman had a huge smile on his face at the finish, such was his delight. In the Motul Xtrem Rider category, a second consecutive victory for Frenchman Patrice CARILLON who, by finishing 13th, strengthened his position in the provisional overall standings in this category of unassisted motorbike trunks.

And that makes five! Fifth special stage success for Pierre-Louis LOUBET and François BORSOTTO. The French driver celebrated the signing of his WRC2 contract with SKODA with a victory. After yesterday’s mechanical problem, the Corsican started 7th this morning. That didn’t stop him from winning the special stage 36 seconds ahead of the CAN AM of Carlos VENTO and Carlos RUIZ MORENO. Heatcliff ZINGRAF and Gregory REVEST completed the day’s podium.

As for Gautier PAULIN and Remi BOULANGER, after a puncture in the morning, the overall leaders drove the other APACHE of LOUBET, without ever forcing the pace in order to save as much as possible on fuel. The Frenchmen nevertheless finished fifth. It was an ideal day for the SSVs, as they had to drop down to 7th position to find the first car with the TOYOTA of Pascal FERYN and Kurt KEYSERS. The Belgians were 24 minutes ahead of the TOYOTA of Dutchmen Teun STAM and Rene BARGERMAN. Hungary’s Imre VARGA and Jozsef TOMA took 3rd place by just 59 seconds.

In the truck category, Tomas TOMECEK was once again the winner. Alone at the wheel of his TATRA, the Czech beat the GINAF of Belgium’s Cedric FERYN, Bjorn BURGELMAN and Tom DE LEUW, while the Dutchmen Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS finished 3rd for once with their SCANIA. Overall, Tomas TOMECEK is just off the podium in the Car/SSV/Truck rankings of this AFRICA ECO RACE 2024.

In the Classic race, Rene DECLERCQ and John DEMEESTER won the 21st Regularity Zone of 35 km on this 9th stage. Driving their 1980 BOMBARDIER Iltis, the Belgians beat Austria’s Peter BRABECK-LETMATHE and France’s Jean-Michel GAYTE. Andres BRABECK-LETMATHE and Laurent MAGAT, also in a 1998 MITSUBISHI Pajero, won the day’s bronze medal.

Tomorrow, the AFRICA ECO RACE caravan will head for the village of Akjoujt on the road between Atar and Nouakchott. The 413km stage, 387km of which will be a special, will start from the bivouac and will allow all those in attendance to watch the race vehicles take off. This will be the penultimate opportunity to shine on a route that is 90% sand, making it a real test of driving skills.

All’arrivo, tutti i concorrenti erano concordi nel dichiarare che questa nona tappa, svolta in forma di circuito attorno ad Amodjar, era la più bella finora in questa 15ª edizione dell’AFRICA ECO RACE. Ma era anche la più difficile, con un imponente cordone di dune lungo 90 km e, ancora una volta, terreni vari che mettevano a dura prova macchine e uomini. Il tutto su 363 chilometri e sotto un sole cocente. Il risultato è stato un distacco abbastanza ampio all’arrivo e molte modifiche nelle classifiche, tranne che nella parte alta della classifica.

Come ogni giorno dall’inizio della competizione, i tre fari delle moto che i membri del CP arrivo e i giornalisti hanno potuto scorgere all’orizzonte erano quelli del 103, del 111 e del 113, ossia Alessandro BOTTURI, Jacopo CERUTTI e Pol TARRES. Le due YAMAHA 700 Ténéré e l’APRILIA 660 Tuareg. Decisamente, questi tre piloti al momento sono incapaci di distanziarsi sulla pista.

La vittoria doveva quindi andare a BOTTURI davanti a CERUTTI e TARRES. Ma senza tener conto di una penalità di 6 minuti per eccesso di velocità in una DZ che ha privato BOTTURI della vittoria e lo ha relegato stasera a 00:07:04 dietro CERUTTI nella classifica generale.

Una sanzione sfortunata a due giorni dalla fine per l’unico pilota esente da penalità dall’inizio del rally.

Inoltre, è da notare la splendida performance del medaglia olimpica italiano Marco Aurelio FONTANA, 4º alla guida della sua HONDA a soli 18 minuti, che partecipa al suo primo grande rally. Precede Marco MENICHINI, per la prima volta nella top 5, alla guida della sua HUSQVARNA e Giovanni GRITTI, che ha avuto un brutto spavento cadendo con la sua HONDA. Fortunatamente senza conseguenze gravi!

Stessa punizione oggi per Alexandre VAUDAN, leader della sfida Rookie Rider By Acerbis e vittima di una grossa caduta che ha danneggiato seriamente la sua KTM. Il pilota svizzero era stordito all’arrivo, che ha comunque attraversato in 7ª posizione, appena davanti al francese Atilio FERT, che aspettava le difficoltà del percorso per brillare. Ora è fatta!

Ma la performance del giorno va a Juan PEDRERO GARCIA. Infatti, la HARLEY DAVIDSON 1250 PAN AMERICA partiva dalla 23ª posizione. Dopo una caduta al chilometro 40 e grazie a un attacco deciso, anche nelle dune, il gigante spagnolo si è aggiudicato il 9º tempo della giornata. Un vero exploit se si guarda alla conformazione del percorso tutt’altro che ideale per la “grossa” HARLEY. Infine, una parola su Kevin DURAND che si aggiudica per la prima volta anche il top 10. Il francese aveva un sorriso smagliante all’arrivo, tanto si è divertito. Tra i Motul Xtrem Rider, seconda vittoria consecutiva per il francese Patrice CARILLON che, classificandosi 13º, rafforza la sua posizione nella classifica generale provvisoria di questa categoria delle moto senza assistenza.

E sono cinque! Quinto successo in speciale per Pierre-Louis LOUBET e François BORSOTTO. Il pilota francese ha festeggiato con una vittoria la firma del suo contratto in WRC2 con la SKODA. Dopo una giornata di ieri segnata da un problema meccanico, il corso partiva 7º stamattina. Ciò non gli ha impedito di vincere la speciale con 36 secondi di vantaggio sul CAN AM di Carlos VENTO e Carlos RUIZ MORENO. Gli spagnoli compiono un’incredibile performance, dato che erano privi di trazione anteriore dal chilometro 20. Heatcliff ZINGRAF e Gregory REVEST completano il podio della giornata.

Per quanto riguarda Gautier PAULIN e Remi BOULANGER, dopo una foratura al mattino, i leader della classifica hanno guidato con l’altro APACHE di LOUBET, senza mai forzare il ritmo per risparmiare al massimo l’auto. I francesi finiscono comunque quinti. Una giornata ideale anche per gli SSV, poiché bisogna scendere fino alla 7ª posizione per trovare la prima auto, il TOYOTA di Pascal FERYN e Kurt KEYSERS. I belgi precedono di 24 minuti il TOYOTA degli olandesi Teun STAM e Rene BARGERMAN. Gli ungheresi Imre VARGA e Jozsef TOMA prendono il 3º posto per soli 59 secondi.

Nel camion, Tomas TOMECEK si è imposto nuovamente. Da solo al volante del suo TATRA, il ceco ha preceduto il GINAF dei belgi Cedric FERYN, Bjorn BURGELMAN e Tom DE LEUW, mentre gli olandesi Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN e Marco SIEMONS terminano per una volta 3º con il loro SCANIA. In classifica generale, Tomas TOMECEK è ai piedi del podio della classifica Auto/SSV/Camion di questa AFRICA ECO RACE 2024.

La tappa di 413 km, di cui 387 km saranno speciali, partirà dal bivacco e permetterà a tutti i presenti di assistere alla partenza dei veicoli da gara. Questa sarà l’ultima occasione per brillare su un percorso composto per il 90% da sabbia, rendendolo una vera prova di abilità di guida.
