BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse gears up for Kumho TCR World Tour

BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse is targeting a new flavour of success as it heads to the opening round of the first-ever season of the Kumho TCR World Tour, where the squad will field two Hyundai Elantra N TCR at the Autódromo Internacional de Algarve in Portimão this weekend (April 28-30).

The BRC Racing Team-run squad is looking to fight at the front and continue the momentum from last year’s final WTCR round in Jeddah, where BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse and Mikel Azcona clinched the last-ever Drivers’ and Teams’ titles in that series.

Nicknamed ‘The Rollercoaster’ due to its changes in elevation and sweeping corners, the 4.653km Autódromo Internacional de Algarve is sure to provide a thrilling start to the season. The venue kicks off a world tour which will take on three further European events, before heading to Uruguay, Argentina and Australia, and then culminating in a final round as part of the iconic Macau Grand Prix.

For the Kumho TCR World Tour, entrants will be racing amidst a greater grid of TCR competitors from the national or local series, with at least nine currently confirmed TCR World Tour cars contesting the corners against a likely total field of over 20 TCR cars in Portimão.

BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse has been ramping up its preparations, testing with the Hyundai Elantra N TCR and both its drivers, Azcona and Norbert Michelisz at a variety of venues. With new tyres supplied by Kumho and a new race format, there will be plenty of elements for the team to master during the upcoming season.

Previous successes posted in Portugal by BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse include Vila Real, which held WTCR Race of Portugal in July 2022, where Azcona demonstrated strong pace to finish in third. A year prior, Michelisz was also in fine form in the Hyundai Elantra N TCR at the Circuito do Estoril, claiming third in Race 2.

Action on track at Portimão begins with two free practice sessions on Friday April 28. Saturday April 29 will feature a 35-minute qualifying session and Race 1, with Race 2 then scheduled for Sunday April 30. Both races will be 55km in length and the latter will employ a partially-reversed grid.

Team Principal of BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse Gabriele Rizzo said: “We are looking forward to this new challenge in TCR World Tour and to continue from where we left off in Jeddah. Mikel and Norbert proved to be a successful combination in the Hyundai Elantra N TCR in WTCR last year, and we are confident that they will be battling at the front in the season ahead. We have been hard at work in the lead up to the first race, testing at circuits across Europe that feature on the calendar so we are as prepared as we can be. Consistency will be key if we want to battle for the title this year, especially with the larger grids.”

Mikel Azcona said: “After our success as a team in WTCR last year, I am excited to get back in the Hyundai Elantra N TCR and compete in the new challenge of TCR World Tour. I raced at Portimão back in 2015 so it is useful to have that previous experience. It’s like a rollercoaster with the ups and downs but I really enjoy driving on a circuit like this. My motivation is high for this season and I’m hoping that we will be fighting for the podium this weekend.”

Norbert Michelisz said: “I’m excited about the start of TCR World Tour, and we’re beginning with a circuit that I really enjoy, even if it is challenging in some places. With the new format it is difficult to anticipate what is going to happen, but I am open-minded. We have a competitive car in the Hyundai Elantra N TCR, and we showed that in previous years. I expect a big grid and a lot of exciting racing in Portimão, and I believe that we can be in the mix.”

BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse prenderà parte al Kumho TCR World Tour

BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse punta ad ottenere nuovi successi ad iniziare dal round di apertura della prima stagione del Kumho TCR World Tour presso l’Autódromo Internacional de Algarve di Portimão, dove questo fine settimana (28-30 aprile) la squadra schiererà due Hyundai Elantra N TCR.

La squadra gestita dal BRC Racing Team è determinata a proseguire lo slancio positivo della scorsa stagione culminata con la vittoria sul circuito di Jeddah, dove BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse e Mikel Azcona hanno conquistato i titoli di pilota e di team dell’ultima serie WTCR.

Soprannominato “The Rollercoaster” per i suoi cambi di pendenza e le curve da affrontare ad alta velocità, l’Autódromo Internacional de Algarve con i suoi 4,653 km regalerà un inizio di stagione decisamente elettrizzante. Qui avrà inizio il tour mondiale che per tre occasioni si unirà al TCR Europe, per spostarsi poi in Uruguay, Argentina, Australia e Cina, in occasione dell’iconico Gran Premio di Macao.

I partecipanti al Kumho TCR World Tour si troveranno a competere con una griglia più ampia di concorrenti TCR provenienti dalle serie nazionali o locali ospitanti. Il round di Portimão sarà teatro di una sfida che conterà un totale di 20 vetture TCR, tra queste nove parteciperanno ufficialmente al TCR World Tour.

BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse ed i suoi piloti, Mikel Azcona e Norbert Michelisz, hanno completato diversi giorni di test precampionato, testando la Hyundai Elantra N TCR su differenti circuiti. La tipologia di pista rappresenta solo una delle difficoltà che il team e piloti dovranno affrontare in questa stagione: il format di gara, infatti, sarà specifico per ogni evento e da quest’anno gli pneumatici saranno forniti da Kumho.

In occasione della WTCR Race of Portugal nel luglio 2022, BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse ha dato dimostrazione di forza con il terzo posto di Azcona sul circuito di Vila Real; lo spagnolo ha replicato il successo ottenuto l’anno precedente da Michelisz che con la sua Hyundai Elantra N TCR aveva conquistato il terzo posto in Gara 2 sul Circuito do Estoril.

La gara sul circuito di Portimão avrà inizio con due sessioni di prove libere venerdì 28 Aprile, seguite da una sessione di 35 minuti di qualifiche programmata per sabato 29 aprile. Gara 1 avrà luogo domenica 30 aprile e conterà su 55 km di lunghezza, seguita da Gara 2 che prenderà il via con una griglia parzialmente invertita.

Il Team Principal di BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse Gabriele Rizzo dichiara: “Non vediamo l’ora di affrontare la nuova sfida del TCR World Tour e di proseguire con i successi dopo la vittoria dei titoli a Jeddah. Come dimostrato durante l’eccellente stagione del WTCR 2022, la combinazione Mikel, Norbi e Hyundai Elantra N TCR è vincente e siamo sicuri di poter ottenere ottimi risultati anche quest’anno. Abbiamo lavorato duramente in vista della prima gara, testando le auto su differenti circuiti e raggiungendo il giusto livello di preparazione. La costanza sarà la chiave se vogliamo lottare per il titolo anche quest’anno, specialmente considerando la partecipazione di un numero più ampio di vetture”.

Mikel Azcona afferma: “Dopo il successo ottenuto lo scorso anno come Team, sono entusiasta di poter tornare a competere con la Hyundai Elantra N TCR ed affrontare la nuova sfida del TCR World Tour. La mia esperienza sul circuito di Portimão risale al 2015, quindi, so cosa aspettarmi da questo circuito conosciuto come rollercoaster per via dei numerosi cambi di pendenza. Sono molto motivato per questa nuova stagione e spero di poter gareggiare per un podio questo weekend.”  

Norbert Michelisz sostiene: “Non vedo l’ora di prendere parte all’inizio di stagione del TCR World Tour che si terrà su un circuito divertente, ma anche impegnativo. Con il nuovo format è difficile fare delle previsioni, ma sono ottimista. Siamo competitivi e lo abbiamo dimostrato anche nelle scorse stagioni. Le vetture in griglia saranno numerose e mi aspetto gare emozionanti a Portimão e buoni risultati da parte nostra.”
