PREMIÈRE ÉTAPE EN MAURITANIE POUR L’AFRICA ECO RACE
La caravane de l’AFRICA ECO RACE s’est levée aux aurores ce lundi 8 janvier pour effectuer la liaison de 370 km vers la frontière Marocaine. Un magnifique buffet typique marocain attendait les participants avant de sortir du pays et d’emprunter le No Man’s Land vers la Mauritanie. Après avoir passé la douane et effectué une liaison de 30 km, les concurrents de cette 15ème édition ont pris le départ depuis Boulanouar pour la spéciale de 205 km vers le bivouac de Chami. Une entrée en matière idéale pour découvrir les pistes sablonneuses empruntées tout au long de cette deuxième semaine.
Une fois encore, en moto, les trois pilotes de tête se sont neutralisés aujourd’hui et la bataille a tourné cette fois à l’avantage de Pol TARRES. Au guidon de sa YAMAHA 700 Ténéré, l’Andorran a devancé de 00:01:07 l’APRILIA 660 Tuareg de l’Italien Jacopo CERUTTI et de 00:01:52 son co-équipier Alessandro BOTTURI. En signant sa 2ème victoire, TARRES reprend la deuxième place du général, la tête est toujours occupée par CERUTTI, alors que BOTTURI est du coup 3ème. Mais les écarts se resserrent et dès demain, tout pourrait basculer dans la boucle de Chami.
Coup de théâtre en revanche en 450 où Guillaume BORNE, révélation de ce début d’épreuve, a chuté au kilomètre 8 de la spéciale.
Le Franco Marocain a été relevé avec un problème à l’épaule et aux côtes. Il a été évacué à l’hôpital de Nouakchott pour des examens complémentaires. Le pilote de l’HUSQVARNA N°125 abandonne donc la tête du classement des 450 à Giovanni GRITTI sur HONDA. L’Italien, qui n’est autre que le fils d’Alessandro GRITTI, véritable légende de la moto tout terrain en Italie, signe le 7ème temps du jour. La bonne nouvelle pour lui est qu’il pourrait aussi récupérer les minutes perdues lorsqu’il s’est arrêté pour porter assistance à BORNE. GRITTI possède désormais plus de 45 minutes d’avance au général sur Alexandre VAUDAN. En terminant 6ème à Chami, le Suisse est à présent leader du challenge ROOKIE RIDERS BY ACERBIS mis en place pour récompenser les nouveaux venus sur un grand Rallye.
Aujourd’hui, les gros cubes ont fait parler la poudre puisqu’on ne retrouve que des bicylindres dans le top 5 avec la 4ème place pour la YAMAHA de l’Italien Alessandro RUOSO, devant l’APRILIA de Francesco MONTANARI. Beaucoup de noms à consonances italiennes et pour cause, on retrouve huit transalpins dans le top 10 du jour et six au général provisoire. Parmi ceux-ci figure Marco Aurelio FONTANA, médaille de bronze en VTT en 2012 à Londres et donc, le premier médaillé olympique à participer à un Rallye en moto.
Sur quatre roues, les deux SSV APACHE ont été intouchables sur cette première étape Mauritanienne entièrement sablonneuse et très rapide. Pierre-Louis LOUBET et François BORSOTTO signent leur troisième victoire de spéciale. Le pilote de WRC devance de 00:05:39 son co-équipier Gautier PAULIN navigué par Rémi BOULANGER, frère d’Edouard BOULANGER, le co-pilote d’un certain Stéphane PETERHANSEL. La 3ème place sur quatre roues revient au SCANIA de Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN et Marco SIEMONS à 00:06:44. Une très belle performance pour ce camionneur Hollandais, fidèle de l’AFRICA ECO RACE et de plus en plus performant sur ce camion racheté au Hongrois Miklos KOVACS après sa victoire dans la catégorie en 2020.
En revanche, certains ont perdu gros aujourd’hui à l’image de Frédéric HENRICY et Eric BERSEY qui ont cassé deux courroies de variateur sur leur SSV POLARIS. Deuxièmes du général en sortant du Maroc, les Français sont à présent devancés par les Espagnols Carlos VENTO et Carlos RUIZ MORENO, 4ème aujourd’hui sur leur CAN AM. Et la chute au classement n’est peut-être pas terminée car ils se sont fait remorquer pour sortir de la spéciale par un autre équipage en difficulté aujourd’hui. Il s’agit de Imre VARGA et Jozsef TOMA victimes d’un tonneau. Heureusement sains et saufs et remis sur leurs roues par Pascal FERYN, pourtant leur adversaire principal au classement auto, les Hongrois ont ensuite joué les Saint-Bernard du Désert en remorquant le SSV de HENRICY.
En attendant, les jours passent et Gautier PAULIN, en tête depuis la première étape, conforte encore un peu son avance au général avec un avantage de 02:34:30. De quoi voir venir sereinement la suite de l’AFRICA ECO RACE.
Demain, mardi 8 janvier 2024, la première des deux boucles de cette 15ème édition de l’AFRICA ECO RACE conduira les concurrents du lieu-dit « Gare Du Nord », situé à 20 km de Chami, à une arrivée directement au bivouac, après tout de même 453 km de spéciale. Un premier gros morceau dans les sables mauritaniens qui pourraient créer des différences.
FIRST STAGE IN MAURITANIA FOR THE AFRICA ECO RACE
The AFRICA ECO RACE caravan got up at the crack of dawn on Monday 8 January to complete the 370km route to the Moroccan border. A typical Moroccan buffet awaited the participants before they left the country and crossed No Man’s Land into Mauritania. After passing through customs and completing a 30km liaison, the competitors in this 15th edition started from Boulanouar for the 205km special stage to the Chami bivouac. It was an ideal start to the second week of the rally, which saw them discover the sandy tracks.
Once again, the three leading motorbike riders were together in the battle today, and this time it turned in favour of Pol TARRES. Riding his Yamaha 700 Ténéré, the Andorran beat Italian Jacopo CERUTTI’s APRILIA 660 Tuareg by 00:01:07 and team-mate Alessandro BOTTURI by 00:01:52.
With his 2nd victory, TARRES regained second place overall, the lead is still held by CERUTTI, while BOTTURI moved up to 3rd. But the gaps are closing and tomorrow, everything could change in the Chami loop
In the 450 category, however, Guillaume BORNE, the revelation of the early stages, crashed out at kilometre 8 of the special stage. The Franco-Moroccan was picked up with a shoulder and rib problem. He was taken to hospital in Nouakchott for further tests. The rider of the N°125 HUSQVARNA therefore offers the lead in the 450 classification to Giovanni GRITTI on a HONDA. The Italian, who is none other than the son of Alessandro GRITTI, a true legend of off-road motorcycling in Italy, set the 7th fastest time of the day. The good news for him is that he could also make up for the minutes he lost when he stopped to assist BORNE. GRITTI now has an overall lead of more than 45 minutes over Alexandre VAUDAN. By finishing 6th in Chami, the Swiss rider is now leader of the ROOKIE RIDERS BY ACERBIS category, set up to reward newcomers to a major rally.
Today, the big guns were out in force, with only twin-cylinder bikes in the top 5, with the YAMAHA of Italian Alessandro RUOSO in 4th place, ahead of the APRILIA of Francesco MONTANARI. There were plenty of Italian-sounding names, and for good reason, with eight Italians in today’s top 10 and six in the provisional overall. Among them is Marco Aurelio FONTANA, bronze medallist in the mountain bike event in London in 2012 and therefore the first Olympic medallist to take part in a motorbike rally.
On four wheels, the two APACHE SSV were untouchable on this first Mauritanian stage, which was entirely sandy and very fast. Pierre-Louis LOUBET and François BORSOTTO scored their third special stage victory. The WRC driver beat his team-mate Gautier PAULIN, driven by Rémi BOULANGER, brother of Edouard BOULANGER, the co-driver of a certain Stéphane PETERHANSEL, by 00:05:39. 3rd place on four wheels went to the SCANIA of Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS at 00:06:44. A very fine performance for this Dutch trucker, a regular on the AFRICA ECO RACE and increasingly competitive on this truck bought from Hungarian Miklos KOVACS after his victory in the category in 2020.
On the other hand, a number of riders lost out today, including Frédéric HENRICY and Eric BERSEY, who broke two variator belts on their POLARIS SSV. Second overall coming out of Morocco, the Frenchmen are now being overtaken by Spaniards Carlos VENTO and Carlos RUIZ MORENO, 4th today on their CAN AM. And the fall in the standings may not be over yet, as they were towed out of the special by another team that was in trouble today. Imre VARGA and Jozsef TOMA were the victims of a rollover. Fortunately safe, and put back on their wheels by Pascal FERYN, despite being their main rival in the car classification, the Hungarians then played the role of “Saint-Bernards” of the Desert by towing HENRICY’s SSV.
Meanwhile, the days went by and Gautier PAULIN, in the lead since the first stage, further consolidated his lead in the overall standings with an advantage of 02:34:30. So there’s plenty to look forward to for the rest of the AFRICA ECO RACE.

PRIMA TAPPA IN MAURITANIA PER L’AFRICA ECO RACE
La carovana della AFRICA ECO RACE si è alzata all’alba di questo lunedì 8 gennaio per percorrere i 370 km di collegamento verso il confine marocchino. Un magnifico buffet tipico marocchino attendeva i partecipanti prima di lasciare il paese ed attraversare la No Man’s Land verso la Mauritania. Dopo aver superato la dogana e percorso un collegamento di 30 km, i concorrenti di questa 15ª edizione hanno preso il via da Boulanouar per la speciale di 205 km verso il bivacco di Chami. Un’inizio ideale per scoprire le piste sabbiose percorse lungo tutta questa seconda settimana.
Ancora una volta, nella categoria moto, i primi tre piloti si sono neutralizzati oggi e la battaglia è stata a favore di Pol TARRES. Alla guida della sua YAMAHA 700 Ténéré, l’andorrano ha preceduto di 00:01:07 l’APRILIA 660 Tuareg dell’italiano Jacopo CERUTTI e di 00:01:52 il suo compagno di squadra Alessandro BOTTURI.
Con la sua seconda vittoria, TARRES riassume la seconda posizione nella classifica generale, mentre CERUTTI mantiene il comando e BOTTURI è ora terzo. Tuttavia, i distacchi si stanno riducendo e domani tutto potrebbe cambiare nella loop di Chami. In una sorprendente svolta nella categoria 450, Guillaume BORNE, una rivelazione nelle prime fasi, è caduto al chilometro 8 della speciale.
Il pilota franco-marocchino è stato sollevato con un problema alla spalla e alle costole, evacuato all’ospedale di Nouakchott per ulteriori esami. Pertanto, il pilota di HUSQVARNA N°125 abbandona la testa della classifica delle 450 a Giovanni GRITTI su HONDA. L’italiano, che non è altro che il figlio di Alessandro GRITTI, vera leggenda della moto off-road in Italia, firma il 7º tempo del giorno. La buona notizia per lui è che potrebbe anche recuperare i minuti persi quando si è fermato per prestare assistenza a BORNE. GRITTI ora ha oltre 45 minuti di vantaggio nella classifica generale su Alexandre VAUDAN. Concludendo 6º a Chami, lo svizzero è ora leader della sfida ROOKIE RIDERS BY ACERBIS, creata per premiare i nuovi arrivati in un grande Rally.
Oggi le moto di grossa cilindrata hanno fatto la voce grossa, con solo motociclette bicilindriche nelle prime 5 posizioni. Il 4º posto è andato alla YAMAHA dell’italiano Alessandro RUOSO, davanti all’APRILIA di Francesco MONTANARI. Molti nomi italiani dominano la scena, con otto italiani nelle prime 10 posizioni del giorno e sei nella classifica generale provvisoria. Tra di essi c’è Marco Aurelio FONTANA, medaglia di bronzo nella mountain bike alle Olimpiadi di Londra 2012 e quindi il primo medagliato olimpico a partecipare a un rally in moto.
A quattro ruote, i due SSV APACHE sono stati imbattibili in questa prima tappa mauritana completamente sabbiosa e molto veloce. Pierre-Louis LOUBET e François BORSOTTO hanno conquistato la loro terza vittoria di tappa. Il pilota del WRC ha chiuso 00:05:39 davanti al suo compagno Gautier PAULIN, navigato da Rémi BOULANGER, fratello di Edouard BOULANGER, il copilota nientemeno che di Stéphane PETERHANSEL. Il 3º posto a quattro ruote va allo SCANIA di Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN e Marco SIEMONS, a 00:06:44 di distanza. Una grande prestazione per questo camionista olandese, fedele partecipante all’AFRICA ECO RACE, sempre più competitivo sul camion acquistato dall’ungherese Miklos KOVACS dopo la sua vittoria di categoria nel 2020.
Tuttavia, alcuni hanno subito gravi perdite oggi, come Frédéric HENRICY ed Eric BERSEY, che hanno rotto due cinghie del variatore sul loro SSV POLARIS. Secondi nella classifica generale al termine del Marocco, i francesi sono ora superati dagli spagnoli Carlos VENTO e Carlos RUIZ MORENO, 4º oggi sul loro CAN AM. La caduta in classifica potrebbe non essere finita, poiché sono stati rimorchiati fuori dalla speciale da un altro equipaggio in difficoltà oggi.
Si tratta di Imre VARGA e Jozsef TOMA, vittime di un capovolgimento. Fortunatamente incolumi e rimessi in piedi da Pascal FERYN, nonostante fossero il suo principale avversario in classifica auto, gli ungheresi hanno poi giocato i San Bernardo del Deserto trainando il SSV di HENRICY. Nel frattempo, i giorni passano e Gautier PAULIN, in testa fin dalla prima tappa, rafforza ulteriormente il suo vantaggio in classifica generale con un margine di 02:34:30. Abbastanza per affrontare il resto dell’AFRICA ECO RACE con fiducia.
Domani, martedì 9 gennaio 2024, la prima delle due loop di questa 15ª edizione della AFRICA ECO RACE condurrà i concorrenti dal luogo chiamato “Gare Du Nord”, situato a 20 km da Chami, ad un’arrivo diretto al bivacco, dopo comunque impegnativi 453 km di speciale. Una sfida significativa nelle sabbie mauritane che potrebbe creare differenze.
