Ciao Mattia, come ti senti e com’è andata la tua preparazione invernale?

“Bene, attualmente mi sento molto, molto bene; fino a questo punto la preparazione è andata tutta secondo i piani e spero ovviamente che continui così. Mi sento bene sulla moto che va molto bene e credo di dover continuare di questo passo, così per l’inizio del mondiale saremo a buon punto.” 

A che punto sei in vista della prima gara degli Internazionali?

“Non sono ancora al 100% e gli Internazionali servono appunto a vedere a che punto siamo, capire dove possiamo migliorare e anche per continuare la preparazione facendo delle gare che poi è il modo migliore per entrare ancora di più in forma. Prendere il ritmo delle gare e soprattutto vedere come va la moto nuova e a che punto dello sviluppo è arrivata, per capire se c’è ancora da lavorare su qualche aspetto. Di base questo degli Internazionali, come ogni anno, è un test generale.”

Prima preparazione invernale tutta sul 450, cosa cambia? Si fa più o meno moto che col 250?

“Si fa la sessa moto ma ovviamente si cerca di lavorare di più perché il 450 è un po’ più fisica, però mi piace molto e mi trovo molto bene sulla moto. Già con le esperienze che ho fatto nella seconda metà della scorsa stagione ho imparato molto, però mi mancava un po’ la preparazione sul 450 perché si trattava di una situazione un po’ improvvisata. Quell’esperienza mi è comunque servita per capire un po’ la moto e capire anche un po’ dove allenarmi di più; quest’inverno lo abbiamo fatto, abbiamo sfruttato un po’ di più la parte atletica e anche la parte in moto, aumentando l’intensità per cercare di arrivare a un livello di preparazione più adeguato alla categoria e alla cilindrata.”

Da fuori dai l’impressione di divertirti molto in quello che fai, è davvero così?

“Si, ho cercato di maturare su questa cosa ma mantenendo l’aspetto ludico. Ovviamente la categoria è diversa, l’esperienza serve, però al posto di essere più seri in tutto, sono tornato indietro, cercando di apprezzare tutto quello che ho, impegnandomi al massimo come giusto che sia. Al terzo anno che sei in una struttura del genere magari certe cose le dai per scontate, invece non lo sono e sono tornato ad apprezzare di più quello che ho. Ho fatto un breve resoconto degli ultimi anni, mi sono ricordato di dove fossi 5 anni fa e capire dove sono arrivato in così poco tempo, mi rende consapevole di aver ottenuto qualcosa di importante, anche se non è andata come speravo. Sto cercando di trovare il lato divertente in tutto quello che faccio, perché le cose mi riescono molto meglio e molto più facilmente. Non è semplice ma sto cercando di godermi i miei 20 anni e la mia opportunità, tirando fuori il meglio possibile, vivendola al meglio possibile.”

Immagino che il primo anno nel team ufficiale non ti fossi dato obbiettivi e le cose sono andate molto bene, la scorsa stagione probabilmente invece ne avevi di importanti ma le cose sono andate come sono andate; dunque niente obbiettivi per quest’anno?

“Dunque ci poniamo obbiettivi differenti, primo tra tutti, divertirsi.”

Hi Mattia, how are you feeling and how was your winter?

“Well, currently I feel very well. Till now the winter has gone according to our plan and I obviously hope it continues like this. I feel good on the bike which perform very well and I think we have to continue with this mood, so we’ll be in good shape for the start of the world championship.” 

Where are you before the first race of the Internazionali d’Italia?

“I’m not yet at 100% and we use the Internazionali to see where we are, understand where we can improve and also to continue working by doing races which is the best way to get even higher. Taking race’s rhythm, seeing how the new bike is and at what stage of development it has arrived, to understand if there is still work to do. Basically the Internazionali, like every year, are a test.”

First winter preparation done on the 450, what’s the difference? Do you ride more or less than with the 250?

“You ride the same but obviously you try to work harder because the 450 is a bit more physical, but I like it a lot and I feel good on the bike. Already with the experiences I had in the second half of last season I learned a lot, but I missed a bit the preparation on the 450 because it was a kind of unexpected situation. However, that experience helped me to understand the bike a little and also understand a little what to train more. We did it this winter, we exploited the athletic part a little more and also the riding, increasing the intensity to try to reach a level of preparation that is more appropriate to the category and engine size.”

From outside it looks like you have a lot of fun in what you do, is this truth?

“Yes, I tried to grown on this but keeping the fun aspect. Obviously the category is different, experience is needed, but instead of being more serious about everything, I went back, trying to appreciate everything I have, putting my all into it as it should be. The third year that you work in a team like this, maybe you give less value to what you have, so I returned to appreciating more what I have. I made a debrief on the past years, I remembered where I was 5 years ago and understanding where I’ve arrived in such a short time and this makes me aware that I have achieved something important, even if it didn’t go as I hoped. I’m trying to find the fun side in everything I do, because then I do my stuff so much better and so much easier. It’s not easy but I’m trying to enjoy my 20 years and my chance, making the best out of it, living it as best as I can.”

I imagine that the first year in the factory team you didn’t set yourself goals and things went very well, last season you probably had important ones but things went not as planned. So no goals for this year?

“We set ourselves just different goals, first of all, to have fun.”
