UNE JOURNÉE PARTICULIÈRE SUR L’AFRICA ECO RACE
Dès le lever du jour, avec des températures négatives sur le bivouac de Boudnib, la journée commençait difficilement pour les participants de l’AFRICA ECO RACE 2024. Ce n’est pas la spéciale de 383 km entre Boudnib et Mhamid, particulièrement copieuse qui allait arranger les choses.
Alors que les concurrents en course, en Classic ou les participants au Raid donnaient leur maximum sur la piste, que l’équipe d’organisation était en place pour gérer la course, la terrible nouvelle du décès de René METGE a commencé à se rependre en France et sur la course. Autant dire que l’ambiance était lourde sur le bivouac de Mhamid en fin de journée et que les performances sur cette 2ème étape sont passées presque au second plan.
Quoi qu’il en soit, la course va continuer demain comme l’aurait voulu René, un des piliers créat
eurs de l’AFRICA ECO RACE.
Dans la catégorie Moto, les trois premiers pilotes du classement n’ont pas amusé le terrain puisqu’ils ont bouclé les 383 km du secteur sélectif en un peu plus de 4 heures, soit 92 km/h de moyenne et près d’une heure d’avance sur le timing prévisionnel.
Parti premier ce matin, Jacopo CERUTTI a ouvert la piste toute la journée avec son APRILIA. Sans jamais être rattrapé, l’italien a même creusé l’écart sur les deux YAMAHA de Pol TARRES et Alessandro BOTTURI et il compte désormais 00:08:53 d’avance au général sur l’Espagnol et 00:10:17 sur son compatriote.
Il était donc plutôt satisfait à l’arrivée :
« J’ai vraiment roulé au maximum aujourd’hui. Je me sens bien sur la moto et j’ai un bon feeling avec le road-book qui est vraiment bien fait. La route est très longue jusqu’à Dakar mais pour l’instant, je prends énormément de plaisir, surtout dans le petit cordon d’aujourd’hui que j’aurais préféré plus long tant je m’amusais. »
Derrière, Guillaume BORNE a confirmé son bon début de rallye en plaçant son HUSQVARNA en 4ème position. Le Franco Marocain devance la KTM du Suisse Alexandre VAU
DAN, tous deux en 450.
Sur quatre roues, pour l’instant, les SSV font la loi et notamment les deux T3 Hybrides APACHE qui raflent les deux premières places aujourd’hui. La victoire revient à Pierre-Louis LOUBET et François BORSOTTO qui devancent de 00:05:24 Gautier PAULIN et Remi BOULANGER, alors que le CAN AM de Heatcliff ZINGRAFF et Gregory REVEST complète le podium de la spéciale à 00:08:26.
Au général, pour sa première participation à un Rallye Tout Terrain, Gautier PAULIN occupe le leadership devant Heatcliff ZINGRAFF. L’ex Champion de Motocross et Capitaine de l’équipe de France victorieuse il y a quelques mois du Grand Prix des Nations, reste néanmoins très humble en évoquant sa performance.
« Le proto APACHE est incroyable et très fun à piloter. Le mode deux ou quatre roues motrices qui permet soit d’emmagasiner de la puissance, soit de disposer d’efficacité, est compliqué à gérer. C’est vraiment du sport d’être dans le baquet. J’ai effectué mes premiers tours de roues aujourd’hui dans les dunes de Merzouga. Je n’ai clairement pas été bon mais c’est normal, il faut que j’apprenne. C’était aussi compliqué dans la poussière parce que j’ai dû temporiser. Mais je suis tout de même satisfait de ces deux premiers jours. »
En terminant 9ème aujourd’hui avec leur TOYOTA, les Belges Pascal FERYN et Kurt KEYSERS
prennent la tête de la catégorie Auto et la 6ème place du général, un peu plus de 15 minutes, devant leurs co-équipiers et compatriote Koen WAUTERS et Kris VEN DER STEEN.
Chez les camions, le Tchèque Tomas TOMECEK, seul au volant de son TATRA, bien que 2ème aujourd’hui, conserve la tête du classement provisoire devant le SCANIA des Hollandais Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN et Marco SIEMONS.
Dans la catégorie Classic, course de régularité réservée aux véhicules tout-terrain construits avant 2000, après la journée d’hier consacrée à la liaison, les cinq premiers secteurs ont été effectués sur cette 2ème étape vers Mhamid. Eric et Tom CLAEYS ont été les plus réguliers sur leur TOYOTA Land Cruiser 73. Les Belges devancent leurs compatriotes René DECLERCQ et John DEMEESTER, grands spécialistes de la discipline sur leur BOMBARDIER Iltis. Le Hollandais Peter BRABECK associé au Français Jean-Michel GAYTE complète le podium provisoire sur un MITSUBISHI Pajero.
Demain, la caravane de l’AFRICA ECO RACE prendra la direction du Sud vers Oued Draa avec 522 km à parcourir dont 463 de spéciale. Une journée intense avec, au programme du jour, l’Erg Chegaga parfois difficile à franchir. Une étape que Manfred KROISS, le Directeur Sportif de l’épreuve, a décidé de dédier à René METGE qui était son mentor et son ami.
A SPECIAL DAY AT THE AFRICA ECO RACE
From sunrise, with sub-zero temperatures at the Boudnib bivouac, the day got off to a difficult start for the participants in the AFRICA ECO RACE 2024. The 383km special stage between Boudnib and Mhamid was not going to make it any easier.
While the competitors in the race, the Classic and the participants in the Raid were giving their all on the track, and the organising team was in place to manage the race, the terrible news of René METGE‘s death began to spread throughout the race. Suffice to say that the atmosphere was heavy on the Mhamid bivouac at the end of the day and that the performances on this 2nd stage almost took second place.
Whatever happens, the race will continue tomorrow as René, one of the pillars of the AFRICA ECO RACE, would have wanted.
In the Motorcycle category, the top three riders in the standings completed the 383km selective sector in just over 4 hours, averaging 92km/h and nearly an hour ahead of schedule.
Jacopo CERUTTI started first this morning and led the way all day in his APRILIA. Without ever being caught up, the Italian even widened the gap over the two YAMAHAs of Pol TARRES and Alessandro BOTTURI and now has an overall lead of 00:08:53 over the Spaniard and 00:10:17 over his compatriot. He was therefore rather satisfied at the finish:
“I really rode to my maximum today. I feel good on the bike and I have a good feeling with the road book, which is really well done. It’s a long way to Dakar but for the moment I’m having a lot of fun, especially in today’s short stage which I would have preferred to have been longer because I was enjoying myself so much.”
Behind him, Franco-Moroccan Guillaume BORNE confirmed his position, putting his HUSQVARNA in 4th place ahead of the KTM of Swiss rider Alexandre VAUDAN, both on 450s.
On four wheels, for the moment, the SSVs are ruling the roost, in particular the two APACHE T3 Hybrids which took the first two places today. Victory went to Pierre-Louis LOUBET and François BORSOTTO, ahead of Gautier PAULIN and Remi BOULANGER by 00:05:24, while the CAN AM of Heatcliff ZINGRAFF and Gregory REVEST completed the special stage podium at 00:08:26.
In the overall standings, in his first participation in a Cross-Country Rally, Gautier PAULIN is in the lead ahead of Heatcliff ZINGRAFF. The former Motocross Champion and captain of the French team, winner of the Grand Prix des Nations a few months ago, is nonetheless very humble when he talks about his performance:
“The APACHE proto is incredible and great fun to drive. The two- or four-wheel drive mode, which allows either power to be stored or efficiency to be used, is complicated to manage. It’s a real sport to be in the bucket. I did my first laps today in the Merzouga dunes. I clearly wasn’t very good but that’s normal, I need to learn. It was also complicated in the dust because I had to hold off. But I’m satisfied with the first two days all the same”
By finishing 9th today with their TOYOTA, Belgians Pascal FERYN and Kurt KEYSERS take the lead in the Car category and 6th place overall, just over 15 minutes ahead of their team-mates and compatriots Koen WAUTERS and Kris VEN DER STEEN.
In the truck category, the Czech Tomas TOMECEK, alone at the wheel of his TATRA, although 2nd today, retains the lead in the provisional standings ahead of the SCANIA of Dutchmen Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS.
In the Classic category, a regularity race reserved for off-road vehicles built before 2000, after yesterday’s liaison stage, the first five sectors were completed on this 2nd stage to Mhamid. Eric and Tom CLAEYS were the most consistent on their 73 TOYOTA Land Cruiser. The Belgians were ahead of their compatriots René DECLERCQ and John DEMEESTER on their BOMBARDIER Iltis, both great specialists in the discipline. Dutchman Peter BRABECK and Frenchman Jean-Michel GAYTE complete the provisional podium in a MITSUBISHI Pajero.
Tomorrow, the AFRICA ECO RACE caravan will head south to Oued Draa with 522km to cover, including 463km of special stages. It will be an intense day, with the Erg Chegaga sometimes difficult to cross. Manfred KROISS, the event’s Sporting Director, decided to dedicate this stage to René METGE, his mentor and friend.
UNA GIORNATA PARTICOLARE ALL’AFRICA ECO RACE
Fin dalle prime ore del mattino, con temperature negative nel bivacco di Boudnib, la giornata iniziava difficile per i partecipanti all’AFRICA ECO RACE 2024. La speciale di 383 km tra Boudnib e Mhamid, particolarmente impegnativa, non ha reso le cose più facili.
Mentre i concorrenti in gara, sia in categoria Classic che i partecipanti al Raid, davano il massimo sulla pista e il team di organizzazione era al suo posto per gestire la gara, la terribile notizia della morte di René METGE ha cominciato a diffondersi in Francia durante la corsa. È facile dire che l’atmosfera era pesante nel bivacco di Mhamid a fine giornata e le performance in questa seconda tappa sono passate quasi in secondo piano.
In ogni caso, la corsa continuerà domani come avrebbe voluto René, uno dei pilastri fondatori dell‘AFRICA ECO RACE.

Senza essere mai raggiunto, l’italiano ha addirittura aumentato il divario sulle due YAMAHA di Pol TARRES e Alessandro BOTTURI e ora ha un vantaggio di 00:08:53 sull’atleta spagnolo e di 00:10:17 sul suo connazionale. Era quindi piuttosto soddisfatto all’arrivo:
“Ho davvero guidato al massimo oggi. Mi sento bene sulla moto e ho una buona sensazione con il road-book, che è davvero ben fatto. La strada è molto lunga fino a Dakar, ma per ora sto prendendo molto piacere, soprattutto nel piccolo cordone di oggi che avrei preferito più lungo tanto mi stavo divertendo.”

In generale, per la sua prima partecipazione a un Rally Tout Terrain, Gautier PAULIN è in testa davanti a Heatcliff ZINGRAFF. L’ex campione di Motocross e capitano della squadra francese vincitrice del Grand Prix des Nations qualche mese fa rimane comunque molto umile riguardo alla sua performance:
‘Il proto APACHE è incredibile e molto divertente da guidare. La modalità a due o quattro ruote motrici, che consente di accumulare potenza o di avere efficienza, è complicata da gestire. È davvero uno sport essere seduti nel sedile. Ho fatto i miei primi giri oggi nelle dune di Merzouga. Non sono stato chiaramente bravo, ma è normale, devo imparare. Era anche difficile nella polvere perché ho dovuto temporizzare. Ma sono comunque soddisfatto di questi primi due giorni.’
Terminando al 9º posto oggi con la loro TOYOTA, i belgi Pascal FERYN e Kurt KEYSERS si prendono la testa della categoria Auto e il 6º posto assoluto, poco più di 15 minuti davanti ai loro compagni di squadra e connazionali Koen WAUTERS e Kris VEN DER STEEN.
Nei camion, il ceco Tomas TOMECEK, unico al volante del suo TATRA, pur essendo secondo oggi, mantiene la leadership della classifica generale davanti allo SCANIA degli olandesi Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN e Marco SIEMONS.

Una giornata intensa con, nel programma del giorno, l’Erg Chegaga a volte difficile da attraversare. Una tappa che Manfred KROISS, il Direttore Sportivo della gara, ha deciso di dedicare a René METGE che era il suo mentore e il suo amico.
